Small is Big

What is the difference between small unimportant things and big important things? I used to think that many things were not important. That somehow they were small things that were just to get over with quickly

Many of us think something big and important is going to happen to us later in our lives; that we'll get involved in something important. We tend to categorize what we do into important things and unimportant things. While we are engaged in what we consider the small unimportant things, we become resentful and impatient because we wish we could be engaged in the big important things.

This is one reason why anger, worry and excessive self concern arise to trouble us. We get angry when we have to put up with what we consider the small unimportant things. We start to worry about how to cope with our frustrations and thus become wrapped up in ourselves, losing our naturalness and spontaneity.

We have to realize that we must fully accept what we are doing in the present moment, whatever it happens to be. We need to do completely what the situation calls for. Life is always what is happening now. This is exactly what life is, a succession of small moments; that's it. Don't make the mistake of thinking that now is unimportant…that the important things is yet to come. Don't wait for the big change, the big experience.

Your life will become big by fully accepting what you're doing in the present small moment. For this is to accept life itself. It is then that we can realize the Buddhist teaching that big is small.
