Hearing The Bell
Listen, listen,
this wonderful sound
brings me back
to my true self.

Bell

Opening
Leader: The Dharma is deep and lovely. We now have a chance to see it, hear it, and practice it. We vow to realize its true meaning. May this gathering inspire us to create a spirit of awakening and understanding, and live a life of peace and harmony.

Dhamapada Reading The Thousands

Leader: Better than a thousand hollow words Is one word that brings peace.

All: Better than a thousand hollow verses Is one verse that brings peace.

Leader: Better than a hundred hollow lines
Is one line of the law, bringing peace.

All: Is it better to conquer yourself
than to win a thousand battles.

Leader: Then the victory is yours.

All: It cannot be taken from you.
Not by angels or by demons,
Heaven or hell.

Leader: Better than a hundred years of worship,
Better than a thousand offerings,
Better than giving up a thousand worldly ways
In order to win merit,
Better even than tending in the forest
A sacred flame for a hundred years—
Is one moment's reverence
For the man who has conquered himself.

All: To revere such a man,
A master old in virtue and holiness,
Is to have victory over life itself,
And beauty, strength and happiness.

Leader: Better than a hundred years of mischief
Is one day spent in contemplation.

All: Better than a hundred years of ignorance
Is one day spent in reflection.

Leader: Better than a hundred years of idleness
Is one day spent in determination.

All: Better to live one day
Wondering
How all things arise and pass away.

Leader: Better to live one hour
Seeing
The one life beyond the way.

All: Better to live one moment In the moment
Of the way beyond the way.
—translation by T. Byrom

Take now a moment or two to sit in the silence; knowing that nothing is expected of us. We have nowhere we have to go. Nothing that we have to do. This is a moment to be in the silence and to allow the silence to be in us and to remember the words “present moment, wonderful moment

Nourishment Offering (a cup of rice!)
With humble awareness we offer this gift of life.
May each precious grain come to nourish body,
mind and spirit—in the Way of Oneness.

Reading
Take courage friends.
The way is often hard,
the path is never clear,
and the stakes are very high.
Take courage.
For deep down, there is another truth;
you are not alone.

Dharma talk by Rev. Koyo Kubose
Spiritual Emergency? Dial 911 Dharma!

Reading
Spirit of Community,
in which we share and find strength
and common purpose,
we turn our minds and hearts toward one another
seeking to bring into our circle of concern
all who need our love and support:
those who are ill,
those who are in pain, either in body or in spirit,
those who are lonely, those who have been wronged.
We are part of a web of life that makes us one with all humanity, one with the universe.
We are grateful for the miracle of consciousness that we share, the consciousness that gives us the power to remember, to love, to care. —Frederick E. Gillis

Presentation of the Heartland Sangha’s
Nourishment Offering

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us. —Albert Schweitzer
Closing Boundless Goodwill

All: Let us cultivate boundless goodwill.

Let none deceive another, or despise any being in any state.

Let none in anger or ill-will wish another harm.

Even as a mother watches over her child, so with boundless mind should one cherish all living beings,

Radiating friendliness over the whole world,

Above, below, and all around, without limit.

—Metta Sutta
